Founded By

Bethany Richards

Years ago, when Bethany found out her father had Parkinson’s Disease, she attached a donation box to her bicycle and began pedaling towards a cure. With significant community support, the Bike Box Project became an official non-profit organization in 2016. It now serves as a resource for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers in eastern North Carolina.

In 2020, the organization secured local grants for certification and equipment, enabling them to launch Rock Steady Boxing. This beneficial fitness class empowers people with Parkinson’s to fight back against the disease. Due to its growth and continued support, the Bike Box Project moved into its own dedicated gym and headquarters in August 2022.

The Bike Box Project is dedicated to providing hope to individuals with Parkinson’s disease, especially within the local community. It raises awareness and funds to support both patients and their caregivers.

The organization’s signature awareness bicycle ride, Bernin’ to the Beach, takes place on the last Saturday of each October. All funds raised from this event are contributed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation to support the search for a cure.
