Founded By
Bethany Richards
Years ago, when Bethany found out her father had Parkinson’s disease, she attached a donation box to her bicycle and began pedaling towards a cure. With significant community support, Bike Box Project became an official non-profit organization in 2016. It now serves as a resource for people with Parkinson’s Disease and their caregivers in eastern North Carolina.
In 2020, the organization secured local grants for certifications and equipment, enabling them to launch Rock Steady Boxing New Bern. This research-based, beneficial fitness class empowers people with Parkinson’s to FIGHT BACK against Parkinson’s disease. Due to its growth and continued support, Bike Box Project moved into its own dedicated gym and headquarters in August 2022.
The mission of Bike Box Project aims to improve the lives of people with Parkinson’s and their caregivers by fostering a community of support that builds hope, engagement, and connection, while empowering individuals to move beyond their limitations through physical activity, compassion, and meaningful relationships.
The organization’s signature awareness bicycle ride, Bernin’ to the Beach, takes place on the last Saturday of each October. All funds raised from this event are contributed to the Michael J. Fox Foundation in support of a much-needed cure.
